Chamomile (also spelled camomile), Matricaria recutita (Synonyms: Chamomilla chamomilla, Chamomilla recutita, Matricaria chamomilla, and Matricaria suaveolens), also called German chamomile, Hungarian chamomile, pineapple weed (referring to the shape of the inflorescences), is an annual plant of the composite family Asteraceae. Chamomile is named for their apple-like scent, is a common name for several daisy-like plants. Their branched stem is erect and smooth and grows to a height of 15-60 cm. The long and narrow leaves are bipinnate or tripinnate. The flowers are borne in paniculate capitula. The white ray florets are furnished with a ligule, while the disc florets are yellow. The hollow receptacle is swollen and lacks scales. The flowers have a strong, aromatic smell, and bloom in early to mid summer. These plants are best known for their ability to be made into a tea which is commonly used to help with sleep and is often served with either honey or lemon. It usually grows near populated areas all over Europe and temperate Asia. It is widely introduced in temperate North America and Australia. As the seeds need open soil to survive, it often grows near roads, around landfills and in cultivated fields as a weed.

Traditionally chamomile has been used medicinally for over 100 separate ailments and conditions, such as cardiovascular conditions, common cold, diarrhea in children, eczema, gastrointestinal conditions, hemorrhagic cystitis, hemorrhoids, infantile colic, mucositis from cancer treatment, quality of life in cancer patients, open penile sores, skin inflammation, sleep aid, vaginitis, and wound healing, and etc.

One of the main active ingredients of the essential oil from German chamomile is the terpene bisabolol. The Other active ingredients include farnesene, chamazulene, flavonoids (including apigenin, quercetin, patuletin and luteolin) and coumarin. Apigenin is a flavone that is the aglycone of several glycosides.

The Chamomile Extract used in dietary supplements is derived from the flower of the plant chamomile (Matricaria recutita).

8.Molecular structure:
Apigenin is found in high amounts in parsley, thyme peppermint. Apigenin is also found in a number of herbs, including chamomile, lemon balm, perilla, vervain, and yarrow. Skyherb Apigenin is extracted from Chamomile flower.

9.Benefits of Apigenin: Apigenin is one of the flavonoids- more precisely one of the citrus bioflavonoids. Apigenin, just like most flavonoids, has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties. As with many flavonoids, Apigenin has potential to reduce the risk of cancer since it has anti-tumor activity. Apigenin also could potentially be useful in allergic conditions since it can have anti-inflammatory properties. It is a nontoxic dietary flavonoid that has been shown to possess anti-tumor properties and therefore poses special interest for the development of a novel chemopreventive and/or chemotherapeutic agent for cancer.
